Q&A with adaPTed Yoga Team Member Ashley
Tell us a bit about yourself…
I have lived in MA my whole life and grew up on the South Shore. I graduated from the University of Massachusetts Amherst in 2016 and started my journey into PT at MGH Institute of Health Professions shorty thereafter. This past summer, I completed a clinical internship at Baystate Physical Therapy in Kingston, MA and am now looking forward to diving into the next part of this school year.
What made you decide to go to PT school?
I always knew I wanted to do something in the health care field and when I was attending UMASS I was introduced to PT while completing my Kinesiology coursework. I wanted to pursue a meaningful career that can have a positive impact on people’s lives and PT seemed to fit that bill. I love how PT is a very hands-on job that allows you to grow a personal connection with patients. After completing my observation hours at a clinic on the South Shore, I realized that this is a field that I could see myself pursuing.
Tell us about your experience with yoga/ mindfulness…
I have taken many yoga classes in the past, however I am new to the concept of adapted yoga. I am hoping to learn more about how yoga can be customized to fit everyones needs. I am also very new to the concept of mindfulness, so I am hoping to learn some new techniques to incorporate into my daily routine!
What interested you in working on adaPTed Yoga for your capstone project?
This Capstone project seemed very hands on and interactive, so it immediately caught my eye. Plus, I love taking yoga classes whenever I have the chance, so this project fit in with something I have been interested in. What do you hope to learn by working on adaPTed Yoga?
One of my main goals in working on this project is to learn skills within the realms of yoga and mindfulness in order to apply into my PT practice. These are 2 activities that many patients can benefit from and by further educating myself, I can ensure the best quality of care to my patients in the future.
